The Problem With Creating a New Category

Creating a new category is difficult.

Not because the idea is necessarily complicated.

Because language creates expectations.

When a new problem appears, people naturally attempt to explain it using the words they already know.

That is useful.

It is also limiting.

When AI-assisted discovery began changing how information was interpreted, the closest existing language was often search optimization.

Search engine optimization had spent decades developing around visibility.

How do we rank?

How do we attract traffic?

How do we improve discoverability?

Those questions remain important.

However, they do not fully describe the emerging challenge.

The challenge was no longer only visibility.

It was interpretation.

An organization could appear in search results and still be poorly understood by AI systems.

A person could publish expertise and still lack clear identity signals.

A product could exist online and still be difficult for AI systems to categorize.

The issue was not simply whether information existed.

The issue was whether the information formed a clear and reliable understanding.

This required a different way of thinking.

The focus moved from optimization toward infrastructure.

Infrastructure exists beneath the visible surface.

It supports stability, consistency, and reliable function.

In the same way, authority infrastructure focuses on the underlying structures that help AI systems interpret entities.

This includes:

• identity consistency,

• relationship clarity,

• category association,

• supporting evidence,

• structured information.

The creation of a new category requires recognizing that the old category no longer explains the entire problem.

That does not mean previous approaches become irrelevant.

It means the environment has changed.

Search optimization addressed one set of challenges.

AI-assisted discovery introduced another.

New categories are not created because existing language is inadequate.
